Wednesday 23rd November 2011The Sports Division is pleased to report that the Grand Final of the 2011 District Sports Festival was held on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at the Benjamin's Park in Portsmouth was a huge success.
All eight villages which qualified as finalists from their district festivals were represented by large numbers of participants at this fun filled and competitive event. The finalists were:
The teams participated in cricket, rounders, volleyball, football, netball and basketball.
At the end of a very exciting day, St. Joseph took the 3rd place trophy with 1st place in Football and 2nd place in Rounders.
Pointe Michel was 2nd with a win in volleyball and 2nd places in netball and football.
Goodwill took the Championship trophy with 1st places in Netball and Basketball.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports congratulates the community of Goodwill for winning the title of "Best Sporting Village for 2011" and says thank you to all the participating teams, village and districts sports committees, supporters and all others who helped in one way or the other in making the 2011 District Sports Festival the success that it was.

Tuesday 15th November 2011The Sports Division in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports will on Sunday, November 20, 2011 stage the Final of the 2011 District Sports Festivals at the Benjamin’s Park in Portsmouth.
The inaugural festival was held in 2010 and was won by Lagoon.
This year’s final is expected to bring together the eight (8) winners from the District Festivals which were held between May and September 2011.
Each of the eight (8) districts will be represented by the village which emerged as the Champion village from the various district competitions.
The grand final, which is expected to commence at 1:00 pm, will see competition in football, cricket, netball, volleyball, rounders, basketball and athletics.
The overall winner will earn the rights to be called the “Best Sporting Village” in Dominica and will be awarded at the prestigious National Sports Awards carded for April 2012.
At Sunday’s event, trophies will be presented to the winner of each sporting discipline, as well as for the overall 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.

In 2010, the Sports Division instituted the District Sports Festival as a strategy to rejuvenate sports at the community level while bringing persons together for recreation and socialization.
It was hoped that coming out of the District Sports Festivals, communities would organize themselves into structured sporting bodies which would lead to the establishment of village sports committees and then this would ultimately lead to the formation of Districts Sports Committees.
The Division extends an invitation to the general public to be part of Sunday’s activities and to be present to witness the crowning of the Best Sporting Village in Dominica for 2011.
Wednesday 9th November 2011The Southern District Sports Committee is making final preparations for the staging of the Southern District Football League for the communities in that section of the island.The formal opening and ball-o-rama is scheduled for Sunday November 13 at 2:30p.m at the Geneva Playing Field in Grand Bay.
It is expected that key sports officials will be present at the formal opening and the villagers of the various communities are asked to turn out in large numbers to support the event and to assist in the development of sporting activities in the communities and district.
Six teams - Bellevue Chopin, Bagatelle, Petite Savanne, Grand Bay, Delices and the Pierre Charles Secondary School are expected participate in this league and matches will be played on Saturday afternoons; with double headers to be played on Sundays at the Geneva Playing Field.
In its quest to better organise sports at the community level, the Sports Division went on drive to develop sports committees at the District level. One such committee is the Southern District Sports Committee and the Division is pleased to be associated with the first organised activity of the Committee.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports recently donated the sum of five thousand dollars (EC$5000.00) to the committee to help with its operations. It is hoped that this football activity will help generate more interest in sports at the district level while creating some form of recreation and greater socialization for the villagers.
Friday 4th November 2011Due to the Independence Celebrations, the Sports Division in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports has taken the decision to suspend matches in 2011 Secondary Schools Football Championships until after the season.

The Grand Final is expected to take place at the Benjamin’s Park in Portsmouth on November 20, 2011 at 12:00pm, where all the teams will compete to determine who is going to be named the “Top Sporting Village of the Year”. The winner will be awarded at the National Sports Awards which will take place in April 2012.
Saturday 22nd October 2011Below are results of the Primary Schools Independence Athletics Meet (Final) held on October 18, 2011. The meet ended prematurely due to inclement weather and soggy field conditions; however the points standings are attached and will stand.
We thank the schools, teachers and students for their interest and their usual cooperation.

The Southern District Sports Committee is presently organizing its self to take on the management of sporting activities in that district.
After three executive meetings, the first held at the Geneva Playing Field Pavilion on July 23, a committee comprising of representatives of the Sports Committees of all the communities met and selected an executive comprising of the following:
Claudius Lestrade (Petite Savanne) President, Walson Pacquette (Grand Bay) Vice President, Shawn Martin (Bagatelle) Treasurer, Kimelda Samuel (Tete Morne) Secretary, Andrea Laurent (Tete Morne) Asst. Secretary/Treasurer, Tony Toussaint (Grand Bay) P.R.O; Isiah Proctor (Bellevue Chopin) Committee Member, Delbert Benjamin(Bellevue) Committee Member, Lex Magloire(Pichelin) Committee Member, Kerry James(Dubique) Committee Member, with Damian Jules (Tete Morne and Alick Rafa (Bagatelle) Nora Francis (Grand Bay) and Roy Tonge (Grand Bay). The Sports Officer, Mr. Abraham Browne, is an Ex-officio member of the committee.
The committee is in the process of ratifying a draft constitution to be submitted to the General Membership when the Annual General meeting is held.
Some of the stated objectives are as follows:
The formal launching and first activity of the committee is expected to be the organizing of the closing ceremony of the National Lottery sponsored Lambert Henderson Cricket League scheduled for September 11 and the Southern District Football League tentatively scheduled to commence on October 2.

Sunday 28th August 2011The Sports Division initiated the Secondary Schools Girls Football Festival in 2008. This year four Secondary Schools registered and the Festival took place Wednesday, 6 July 2011 in Portsmouth.
The Portsmouth Secondary School (PSS), the Isaiah Thomas Secondary School (ITSS), the Wesley High School (WHS) and the Dominica Grammar School (DGS) played a round robin to determine the 2011 champion. The Festival was played 7 vs. 7 on a 60m x 45m pitch with 5m x 2m goals (the same as the U-13 primary school boys). The duration of one game was two 12 minutes halves and 5 minutes halftime.
