Commencement of 2009 National Schools Netball Championships

The 2009 National Schools Netball Championships organized by the Sports Division Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development, Sports & Youth Affairs opened on Wednesday 22nd January 21, 2009 at 3:00pm at the Dominica Grammar School.

Ten Secondary Schools registered 24 teams to participate in the competition. Schools participating are: Dominica State College, Pierre Charles Secondary School, Goodwill Secondary School, Dominica Grammar School, North East Comprehensive School, Portsmouth Secondary School, Castle Bruce Secondary School, Isaiah Thomas Secondary School, Convent High School and St. Martin’s Secondary School.

The teams heard addresses from the Acting Sports Coordinator Mr. Trevor Shillingford, His Worship the Mayor of Roseau Mr. Cecil Joseph, Parliamentary Representative of Roseau Central Hon. Norris Prevost, President of the Dominica Netball Association – Miss Mavis Williams and our very own new Minister for Education, HRD, Sports & Youth Affairs Hon. Sonia Williams.

A Ball – O – Rama followed with the Under 14 age Category with seven (7) Teams participating. The Hon. Sonia Williams gave the first past to commence the Games. North East Comprehensive team and Portsmouth Secondary School, met in the final Game. Portsmouth Secondary School emerged Champions with a score 5 goals to 4 goals. In the other Ball – O – Rama with the Under 16 and Under 20 age Categories, 17 teams participated. The Dominica State College emerged champs defeating Convent High School U20, 8 goals to 2 goals. Each winning Ball – O – Rama team was awarded Netball, compliments the Sports Division.

The 2009 National Schools Competition will begin on February 2nd at 3:00 pm with Pierre Charles Secondary School U16 versus Goodwill Secondary U16 and Game 2 will see Pierre Charles Secondary U20 versus Goodwill Secondary U20. Both games will be played at Grand Bay.
