The Sports Division in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports will host the 2011 Windward Islands Schools Games from July 24 to 31.
The Games, which are sponsored by CBN and WINLOTT will be called the “CBN/WINLOTT Windward Islands Schools Games” and will bring together the best student athletes in the Windward Islands.
Students will compete in basketball (male & female), volleyball (male & female), football, netball and track and field.
This year’s teams in the various sporting disciplines will comprise of the minimum number of players required for the use of “pure teams”. It is hoped that this new initiative will generate greater interest in the Games.
The Games will commence with a grand opening ceremony on Sunday, July 24, 2011 at 10:00 am at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium, which will be followed by the track & field meet at midday, and later in the evening, a football match between Dominica and St. Lucia will take place at 6:30 pm.
Various dignitaries including the President of Dominica – Dr. N.O Liverpool and Mrs. Liverpool, officials of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, members of Cabinet, and visiting guests will be at this ceremony.
The camp village will be at Portsmouth, which will be the venue of the majority of the events; the Pierre Charles Secondary School hard court will also stage a netball and basketball match on Wednesday, July 27, 2011.
The Sports Division and the Dominica National Lotteries Commission – the local representative of the sponsors will on Thursday, July 21, officially launch the Games with a media briefing at 2:00 pm at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium’s Conference Room.
