The Sports Division invites you to the opening of the 2013 NBD Primary Schools Football Championship on Friday, January 25 at the Benjamin’s Park in Portsmouth.
An opening ceremony will be held at the 10:00 am; expected to address the students at this ceremony are the Sports Coordinator, the Mayor of Portsmouth, the Parliamentary Representative for the Portsmouth Constituency, a representative of the NBD -the championship sponsor and the Hon. Minister for Culture, Youth and Sports – Mrs. Justina Charles.
Following the opening ceremony, the championship will commence with competition in the North and North East zones.
Fifty-two (52) schools will participate in this year’s championship, an increase of two (2) over last year when fifty (50) schools registered to participate. The NBD Primary Schools Football Championship continues to realize increase in participation each year.
NBD began sponsorship of this championship in 2010 with forty-five (45) schools participating. The Primary Schools Football Championship in its present form was first held in 2003 with eight (8) schools participating.
This year’s championship will see competition in nine (9) zones, with matches to be played at Portsmouth, Newtown, Castle Bruce, Lindo Park, Lio Park, Dublanc, Point Michel and Grand Bay.
The top twenty-four (24) teams from the zonal competition will move on to the intermediate round, which will be followed by the quarter final stage leading to the final round.
Phase Two (II) of this NBD sponsored championship will be the Girls Festival, which is expected to be held on March 12, with Phase Three (III) being the District Championship, where nine (9) teams representing the nine zones will compete in two (2) zones.
St. Luke’s Primary School is the defending Boys’ Champion, Grand Fond / Delices combined won the Girls Festival in 2012 while the West Central District is the defending District Champion.
