The 2014 National Bank of Dominica (NBD) Primary Schools Football Championships organized by the Sports Division in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports kicked off with an opening ceremony on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at the Benjamin’s Park in Portsmouth.
The ceremony featured addresses from the Sports Coordinator – Mr. Trevor Shillingford, Hon. Ian Douglas – the Member of Parliament for the Portsmouth Constituency and Ms. Yvonne Maynard, an official from the National Bank of Dominica.
Following the ceremony, the schools of the North Zone took to the field for Day 1 of their first round of competition.
Fifty-three (53) primary schools, the largest number of schools in any Sports Division organized championship, are registered to take part in this year’s competition.
The Championship will be played in eight (8) zones with matches held around the island. This stage will be done in a Round Robin format and is expected to end on February 28th. Twenty four (24) teams will advance to the Intermediate round which will then be followed by the Knock Out stage.
Following this segment of the competition, the schools will be divided into eight (8) district teams for competition to determine the winner of District Championship.
A Girls Festival will also form part of the competition and will begin on March 11, 2014.
The Sports Division continues to express its gratitude to the National Bank of Dominica. NBD has shown that it is steadfast with its sponsorship of such an important youth championship; a championship, which is a breeding ground for future players.
In 2013, the Goodwill Primary was crowned the Boy’s Champion team whilst the District Championship was won by South West District.
Grand Fond Primary won its consecutive title in the Girls Festival in 2013
