Subsequent to eight (8) district sports festivals, which were held between June – November 2014, the Sports Division held the Grand Final of the District Sports Festival for the 2014 year on Sunday, January 11, 2015 at the Benjamin’s Park in Portsmouth.
The eight communities which qualified for the Final were:
- Dubique representing the South
- Pointe Michel representing the South West
- Morne Prosper representing the Valley/Central
- Crayfish River/Salybia representing the East
- Grand Fond representing the South East
- Salisbury representing the West
- Portsmouth/Glanvillia representing the North
- Wesley representing the North East
However, only six (6) communities participated since Grand Fond and Dubique did not show.
The day was filled with excitement as the villages competed in track, basketball, volleyball, netball, rounders, cricket and football and at the end of day’s activities, the village of Morne Proper emerged as the overall winner, with a total of 31 points with 1st placed finishes in rounders and basketball and a second place in cricket.
Crayfish River/Salybia followed with 27 points with wins in cricket and track and 2nd place in football. Pointe Michel came in 3rd with wins in football and volleyball.
Trophies were presented to the winners of the seven (7) sporting disciplines – cricket – Crayfish River/Salybia, Football – Pointe Michel, Volleyball – Pointe Michel, Basketball – Morne Prosper, Netball – Wesely, Rounders – Morne Prosper and Track – Crayfish River/ Salybia. In addition, championship trophies were also presented to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed teams.
The Champion village will receive the award for the “Best Sporting Village of 2014” at the National Sports Awards to be held on May 6, 2015 and is also expected to receive a cash incentive from the Minister responsible for Sports – Hon. Justina Charles.
The DSF is one of the strategies that the Sports Division is utilizing to rejuvenate sports at the community level while bringing people together for recreation and socialization, with an overall aim of developing sporting structures within the communities.
