The Sports Division of the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Culture and Constituency Empowerment will on Thursday, January 29, 2015 commence its 2015 Primary Schools Football Championship.
The National Bank of Dominica has once again partnered with the Division by sponsoring the event for the sixth (6th) consecutive year and for the first time, the Championship will have its opening ceremony done in the village of the Thibaud.
The Opening ceremony is carded to begin at 10:00 am and will precede the first round of matches in which the schools from the North East Zone will be seeking to qualify to the next round.
Addresses are expected to come from the Sports Coordinator – Mr. Trevor Shillingford, Deputy Chair of the Thibaud Village Council – Ms. Elena Joseph, the Executive Manager, Marketing and & Community Relations at the NBD- Mrs. Suzanne Piper and Hon Roslyn Paul who will represent the Minister for Youth, Sports, Culture and Constituency Empowerment.
Fifty-two (52) schools have registered to take part in this year’s championship. The schools will be separated into eight (8) zones and matches played in a Round Robin format at various venues on island. Twenty four (24) teams will advance to the Intermediate round which will then be followed by the Knock Out stage; the round robin matches will take the format of a two-day festivals in most the zones will whereas two of the zones will see action over three days.
The Girls Festival and District Championship are the other phases of this year’s championships.
Last year, the Roosevelt Douglas Primary won boy’s segment, Goodwill Primary won the girls’ segment whilst the South West won the District segment in last year’s championship.
